The Team
Bob Pickart I am the Chief Scientist, which means that I coordinate all of the science activities for this cruise. |
Hedinn Valdimarsson I am a physical oceanographer. My main job will be to assist with mooring work, both deployment and recovery. |
Steingrimur Jonsson I am a physical oceanographer. My main job will be to assist with mooring work, both deployment and recovery. |
Kjetil Våge I am a physical oceanographer working on dense water flow through the Denmark Strait |
Laura de Steur I am a physical oceanographer at the Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) and study the East Greenland Current. In addition to analyzing the current meter data obtained by the ocean moorings we will sample the upper ocean for tracers to identify the sources of the Arctic freshwater. |
Steve Murphy |
Jim Ryder |
Lorendz Boom I am a marine technician and will assist recover and deploying the Netherlands' moorings. |
Dan Torres I'll be working with data from an instrument mounted on the ship (called an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler or ADCP), which provides us with information of ocean current velocities. In addition I will help with the mooring recoveries. |
Roald van der Heide |
Carolina Nobre I am a research associate at WHOI and will be working mainly with the acquisition and processing of the CTD/LADCP data. I have been working with observational physical oceanography since 2006 when I obtained my bachelor's degree in oceanography. My master's degree allowed me to further explore climatological and model-derived data sets in order to better understand large-scale ocean processes. I am particularly interested in data processing and visualization, allowing us to better understand different oceanographic processes. |
Dave Wellwood I have been WHOI's principle Hydrographer for over 20 years now and on scientific cruises such as this, my responsibilities will include deployment/recovery of the CTD-rosette sampler, drawing samples from the Niskin bottles on that system, and analyzing them for salinity content. I will also assist with mooring work as needed. |
Selina Vage I am a PhD student at the University of Bergen, currently working with theories for pelagic microbial food web structures, but also interested and to some extent educated in physical oceanography (Barents Sea Polar Front). I will be a CTD watchstander, thereby being responsible for salinity, temperature and depth measurements as well as water sampling. Off shift, I will be watching fulmars and ice bergs passing by. |
Eli Borve I am a graduate student at the University of Bergen, starting the final year of my masters degree in Physical Oceanography this autumn. During the cruise I will be a part of the CTD-team. |
Eric Brugler I'm a graduate student in the MIT/WHOI Joint Program and I will be collecting data using a piece of equipment called a "CTD". This allows us to measure the salinity, temperature and density throughout the water column. |
Stefanie Zamorski I will be assisting with the collection of several vertical sections of temperature, salinity and density throughout the water column. A CTD is a piece of oceanographic equipment used for determining physical properties and vertical structure of sea water. |
Dana Mastropole |
Femke de Jong I'm a postdoc in physical oceanography interested in the Denmark Strait overflow and the circulation in the Iceland Sea. |
Mirjam Glessmer I will be measuring dissolved oxygen on this cruise. As a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bergen, Norway, I focus my research on the freshwater budget of the Nordic Seas. Understanding the role of the East Greenland Current is currently one of the biggest and most exciting challenges in this field, and I am excited to participate in this cruise. |
Arthur Kappetijn I'm a graduate student undertaking the final year of my Master degree in Meteorology, Climatology and Physical Oceanography at the university of Utrecht, Netherlands. I will do my Master research project, at the NIOZ, about the Arctic freshwater flux at the Denmark Strait, so I'm very interested in the area we are going to investigate. I will be collecting water samples for nutrients and d18O research. |
Wilken von Appen I am a graduate student at WHOI and I will be on the cruise to learn more about the region around Denmark Strait. This is the focus of my PhD thesis and I am here to gain field experience in this region and to learn more about the formation and fate of Denmark Strait Overflow Water. |

Lena Schulze |
Solange van der Werff A short while ago I graduated from Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, and I started working for MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands) in Wageningen at the Trials & Monitoring department. I have been given the opportunity to join the James Clark Ross as a part of my task to investigate events of (floating) structures encountering ice during transit or operations. |
Dallas Murphy I'll be writing daily journals about the science and life aboard James Clark Ross. This is my fourth Arctic cruise with Bob Pickart and this outreach team. |
Rachel Fletcher This is my third science cruise and I'm excited to document the research, wildlife and life on board ship through photography. |
Benjamin Harden I am a research scientist working at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution with a special interest in science education. My scientific area of expertise is the weather and underlying seas around Greenland so I'm very excited to be documenting in film the life and science aboard the James Clark Ross. |
Samuel Mansfield A marine biology graduate turned assistant producer on projects for BBC and Discovery. For the next month I get to marry the two as part of the outreach team, hence the large smile I'll be wearing aboard the James Clark Ross. |
Sindre Skrede I am a journalist from Norway, and participated on last year's cruise in the same area. Having a keen interest for science, and the communication of science, I will be aboard the James Clark Ross and write for different Norwegian media channels during the cruise. |
