Sunrise at the ice edge
Anyone who knows my work knows that I have a thing for ice. I have a fascination for icicles, iceforms, glaciers, and sea ice in all of its forms. One morning I woke up, looked out the porthole, and decided I was skipping breakfast - we were at the ice edge. In the darkness of predawn, I set up some shots of a CTD cast on the starboard side of the ship. Then I noticed a cloud, one little cloud, starting to turn pink. Immediately I grabbed all of my gear and headed to the fantail. By now breakfast was over and a crowd was starting to form. The sun, just barely risen, lit up the clouds like they were on fire. The calm waters reflected the color, turning the whole world orange. I was firing away with film and digital as fast as I could. In a half hour the light had faded.
