- Bow wake
This is a shot that I had previsualized... A view of the bow from in front of the ship as we were steaming along--but the problem was how to get it? On this year's cruise I began to make more and more use of a tripod. My trusty tripod is a tool I am seldom without on my terrestrial excursions but something I rarely use on a pitching, vibrating ship (the engine vibrations tend to transmit right through the legs, to rob you of any stability you hoped to achieve using the tripod in the first place!) For this application, though, a tripod was the perfect tool. I extended the legs all the way, firmly strapped my camera to the ballhead, started a 5-second self-timer, and pushed the entire assembly as far out in front of the ship as possible. Then I pulled the camera back in, checked the shot, and repeated (about 70 times). I tried a variety of shutter speeds, and decided that this slow one (perhaps 1/15th of a second) yielded the most interesting shot.
