Wildlife - Muskoxen

After the cruise finished in Nome, a group of us rented a van and drove off into the surrounding tundra in search of... a hot spring. We never did make it to the hot spring (the road had some pretty deep water-filled ruts towards the end!) but we did see this herd of muskoxen in the wild near the road. A few of us watched the shaggy beasts from a hillside while the rest of the group grew increasingly bored in the van... So, there I was, crouched in the tundra, 40mph winds whipping over me... and after a half hour or so, the muskoxen deemed me to be "non-threatening"- they laid down, munched on tundra plants, and generally ignored me. I probably could have watched them all day, but I suspected the hot-spring group was ready to shoot me. As my friend Ryan came to retrieve me from my vigil, the group raised their heads to check out the newcomer, and I snapped this last photo. Thanks for waiting, guys!
