Science -
Red room
Ellen Naughter was a most reluctant model. It took me about a week just to get a snapshot for the science crew page, so I had a feeling I wasn't going to get many shots of Ellen actually doing science on this cruise! Perhaps it was her family's repeated emails to me asking to see more photographs of her on the website, but whatever it was, she finally conceded to do this shoot. She was working in the "red van" for Dean Stockwell, who studies phytoplankton. In order to "fix" the phytoplankton so that they stop reproducing, a red light is used. The light made for an eerie, mad-science kind of atmosphere. I used a tripod to steady the camera for this slow-speed exposure.
