Wildlife - Lost Walrus

This surprise visitor was our companion for about 10 hours one day. Every time we stopped for a CTD station, this young walrus would catch up with us and circle the ship, checking us out on deck with his beady red eyes. This particular shot was the result of patient stalking. The walrus had just submerged on the port side of the bow. Since it looked like he was headed to the starboard side, a bunch of us sprinted over to that side of the ship. Sure enough, within a few seconds we could see a pale walrus-shaped outline just below the surface. I got this shot immediately after he exhaled (the water droplets in the upper right of the photo were part of the walrus's exhalation.)
