The Cruise
of a Lifetime
This image gallery is a collection of my personal favorites from our four week journey to the "Edge of the Arctic Shelf."
When Bob Pickart first invited me to come along on this trip, I could hardly contain myself... This was the opportunity I had
been dreaming of - the chance to not only see things most people only see on the Discovery Channel, but to have the job of
documenting our oceanographic expedition... I signed on at once.
Having heard so many amazing things about this icy world from many
WHOI Arctic veterans, my expectations were high. I don't think it
would be an understatement to say that I was blown away. Every day
was something new, from polar bears to fogbows to diving kittiwakes.
This surreal place defied description - it felt like another world.
Select among the thumbnail images at right for enlarged versions and
my comments on these "best of the best" images. I have also included
some technical information for curious shutterbugs.
I also invite you to visit my personal website, where you can see more images from my travels. Enjoy!

Dedication: This image collection is dedicated to the memory of Galen and Barbara
Rowell. Tragically, these inspirational nature photographers perished
in a plane crash this August returning from a photo shoot in
the Arctic. Galen's photographs and essays have been a personal inspiration to me in my
photography career, as I am sure they have for countless others.
