- Broken Ice in Barrow Canyon
Bright sunny moments like this were pretty rare in the Arctic; more
often than not we were plagued by thick, biting fog. When full sunlight
hits the ice, it's an amazing sight - and an unusual one.. I would
guess that most people are used to seeing a dark foreground and a
lighter-colored sky (dark trees/grass with a light-blue sky, for instance)...
Here you have exactly the opposite. The bright light allowed me to
use an extremely fine-grained 50 speed slide film to bring out all
of the detail and color in this scene. Although this ice looks beautiful,
it makes the mooring crew wince, since this is the worst kind of ice
for deploying instruments - any open-water area the Captain manages
to make with the propellers is instantly replaced by more chunks.
