- Fogbow and Glory
This image captures two optical effects which, although not unique
to the Arctic, are certainly more common here. The first thing I noticed
was the circular "rainbow-like" band of white. This is a fogbow, and
forms when light is refracted through small droplets of fog. We saw
about 4-5 fogbows during our cruise, but this was the only one which
formed a nearly complete circle. The other optical effect is a type
of halo known as an anticorona or glory. Look closely at the center
of the image, below the chunk of ice. You should be able to make out
a small circle of light. That circle is forming around the shadow
of my own head as I am shooting from the bow (you can also almost
make out the shadow of the ship's bow).
