Wildlife - Black-Legged Kittiwakes Feeding
Competition for food in the Arctic is fierce! In this image, two black-legged
kittiwakes dove into the water to snatch arctic cod, but only one
was successful. Whenever we neared the coast of Alaska on our cruise,
we picked up a devoted following of seabirds. The ship's massive propellers
provided a clear channel of stirred-up water in our wake, bringing
the cod right to the surface. Those hundred or so seabirds were in
heaven.
