Wildlife - Leaping Bear

This shot was taken a few seconds after the previous image. The bear suddenly realized that he was way too close to the ship for his comfort, and took off at full speed (all the while, keeping one wary eye on us.) This image caught him mid-leap as he was crossing narrow leads in the ice. One interesting thing to note is that the bear now appears to be completely dry! Only seconds before, this bear had been swimming. A coat that sheds water this quickly is one of the many amazing adaptations that allows the polar bear to reign as the king of arctic predators.
