Science
- Ice Warrior
As beautiful as the Arctic is, it can be a real pain when you're trying
to do put instruments in the water. In this image, Marine Science
Officer Paul Rodriguez is manning the "ice pole," a makeshift
device for pushing floes away from the science gear. Although the
pole didn't provide a lot of rigidity (observe the nearly 90 degree
bend in the lower right corner of the frame), if you kept at it, the
floe would eventually move. Paul was by far the best at keeping the
ice at bay, and to his credit no science equipment was damaged!
